I found this funny photo hanging around on imgur and saved it. And then I came across a statistic that summed up why this pic was not so cute. This is the a headline story on The Guardian:
“Earth has lost half of its wildlife in the past 40 years, says WWF –
Species across land, rivers and seas decimated as humans kill for food in unsustainable numbers and destroy habitats”
We see stats about global warming (OK, CLIMATE CHANGE) and the like all the time. Just since I’ve been on this planet (a little over half a century), we have DOUBLED the population, from somewhere around 3.5 billion to over 7. If you’ve never looked at it, check out the World Population Clock. I never planned on having kids, for a LOT a reasons. I’m not anti-kids, although they do tend to ruin EVERYTHING. But when you look at what overpopulation is doing the planet, it doesn’t matter how much money you have or how lovely your family is (or that gay couples are REALLY good at parenting)– the sad fact is, this growth is totally unsustainable. We can’t keep making SO many people. And the sad irony is that we are leaving this planet to our kids to deal with. Check this;
“The report concludes that today’s average global rate of consumption would need 1.5 planet Earths to sustain it. But FOUR PLANETS would be required to sustain US levels of consumption.”
I wish there were something we could do about it, but there really isn’t, and if there were, we wouldn’t do it. It’s everyone’s “right” to have a family, and ANY mention of curbing the impulse – can you IMAGINE the reaction? So, we’ll keep using up the earth. OK. That’s it. Go on with your day.
