Sometimes, I’ll admit I’m late to the TV party. I had a terrible toothache two weeks ago and as a shut-in, discovered the BBC’s Sherlock. I’d always intended to watch, but just never committed to it. This May, I met Sherlock himself, Benedict Cumberbatch, in London at Peter O’Toole’s memorial and he was charming, friendly and handsome in person. But the women and girls at the event, who live in London, were BESIDE themselves (in a low-key British way.) Going from the Memorial to the after party, one friend got a ride with Ben in his convertible, which sent her into overdrive. Tooling around London with Sherlock Holmes! I didn’t get the full impact of this visual until I had finished all three seasons of the series. (Each episode is nearly 90 minutes, so it’s like watching 9 films) Sherlock is set in present-day London and Holmes is somewhat of a media sensation within the show. I can see how the series captured all of London while it was airing. The show is all over the city, all the time, and that alone is fun –seeing so much of London.
Well, it was just announced that it’s s l o w l y headed toward a Season 4 premiere. Series creators and writers Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat announced that they’ve already started writing the fourth and fifth seasons, needing only to resolve scheduling conflicts before they can start shooting. (Benedict is a BIG international star now, thanks to Star Trek.) Apparently, the rumor mill has been churning, and it seems that Sherlock’s archnemesis Jim Moriarty, played to the hilt by Andrew Scott may return. Stephen Moffat, who created the show with Gastiss and also plays Cumberbatch’s brother, told The Hollywood Reporter;
“We practically reduced our cast to tears by telling them the plan. Honestly, Mark and myself are so excited with what we’ve got coming up, probably more excited than we’ve ever been about Sherlock. … Honestly, I think we can [top the last season],”
When the series FINALLY does premiere in 2016, there will be new cast members, one of them being the offspring of Watson and Mary Morstan. Also, actor Tom Hiddleston may be cast to play Sherrinford Holmes, Sherlock’s hypothetical older brother.
Martin Freeman, who is fantastic as Dr. John Watson says;
“It’s going to be full of surprises for you, and for us and for everybody. I think we just know to expect the unexpected now.”
You got plenty of time so you can s t r e t c h out Netflix’s 3 seasons, as long as you like – as long as they remain there. But if you get hooked like me, you are likely to stay up late binge-watching. It’s a really great show. If you need a list of MORE reasons why you should be watching, here are 19 from Buzzfeed.
