I know it’s really BORING to talk about the weather – but we’re SO sick of the cold in the northeast. I’ve really hit a wall, so I’m fantasizing about a luxury get away, damn the expense. (Why create a budget fantasy?) Out in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the Maldives are remote, and the hotels are almost exclusively upscale. Such is the case at Kandolhu Island, a resort on a small private island in the northern Maldives, ringed with pristine beaches and only accessible only by seaplane. It has thirty villas on the beach, on stilts above the blue, blue ocean, with thatched roofs and wood-plank decks. The villas are all totally modern inside, with amenities that range from iPads and espresso machines to mini wine cellars, huge flatscreens and iPhone stereo docks. Each has a private deck with chaise lounges and many have plunge pools. They have four restaurants but the real draw, though, is the natural landscape of the island, the idyllic water and the colorful coral reef. I can can go snorkeling, have sailing lessons, and I won’t have to go far offshore to swim with the turtles and parrotfish. Sounds great, huh? It better be at $1250 a night. I think 10 days here, with a stop-over in Singapore for a stay at Marina Bay Sands plus Business-Class on Singapore Air plus expenses, would cost upwards of $30,000 for two. Oh, you’re probably thinking, “Who’s that guy at the top of the post?” That's my Brazilian model boyfriend, Gustavo Krier. What? Jake Gyllenhaal is busy playing Broadway and I’m NOT going all the way to the Maldives by myself, kids.
