I always say you never regret buying things, but you do regret getting rid of them. 100 years ago I was moving from Houston to New York and had a yard sale with my best buddy. She watched my stuff while I ran in the house to eat a bit and in the interim sold my collection of WET magazines for nothing. I still miss them.
Published between '76 & '81 WET: The Magazine of Gourmet Bathing, was truly about wetness but it was also the premiere magazine of the West Coast New Wave and it set the tone for what the 80s became. Based out of Venice, Leonard Koren, its creator had a keen eye for talent featuring the early work of Matt Groening, Gary Panter, Matthew Rolston, and Herb Ritts among many others.
Today, the influence of WET can’t really be denied, taking a place alongside Slash, SPY, Manipulator and Ray Gun as short-lived magazines that cut a bold aesthetic and editorial line that would come to be cherished by the generations to follow. And now I can get back all that I lost so long ago, and you can get WET too. Karen published a compendium called Making WET, which you can get here on Amazon, or maybe at your local bookstore. They still have those?
