Cindy Sherman is one of the most important living artists of the 20th century.
If you don’t know her work, it’s essential the world’s most elaborate and expensive selfie series.
This Saturday at Metro Pictures in NYC – she’s exhibiting new work where she’s transformed herself into an extraordinary cast of gender non-specific characters, further exploring her investigation into the nature of identity and self-representation.
The figures are dressed designer clothing and are posed in front of digitally manipulated backgrounds composed from photographs that Sherman took herself while traveling through Bavaria, Shanghai, and the UK.
The reason why Sherman is such a chameleon could be explained by a single question asked by Frieze,
“What surprises people about you?”
“I’m ordinary looking.”
Sherman one-person exhibition at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, opens today & runs through January 3, 2021.
