Dismaland is a real place. It’s a festival of art, amusements and “entry-level anarchism”. Bring the whole family and enjoy the latest addition to our “chronic leisure surplus”.
Are you looking for an alternative to the sugar-coated tedium of the average family day out? Or just somewhere a lot cheaper? Then this is the place for you.
Set inside an old public swimming pool facility in the English coastal city of Weston-super-Mare, Banksy told Juxtapoz that is situated for the perfect art audience.
“Like so many projects, it started with a gap in the fence. Eight months ago, I came to Weston on a windy day, and one of the boards on the gate had blown down. From the first glimpse through the gap, I was smitten. I used to come here swimming as a kid, but no one’s been inside for fifteen years.”
To start off, you enter through a tough round of fake security and each agent is pretty dismal, acting or not. Of course, the centerpiece of the park is the castle, with an installation of Cinderella’s Carriage by Banksy. It also features 3 main art galleries, with artists Jeff Gillette, Zaria Forman, Josh Keyes, and more, and a few new Banksy paintings too. Too bad for U.S. it’s in the UK. It’s open, starting this weekend, everyday from August 22 – September, 2015. 5 weeks only.
According to their website: “Contains uneven floor surfaces, extensive use of strobe lighting, imagery unsuitable for small children and swearing. The following are strictly prohibited in the Park – spray paint, marker pens, knives and legal representatives of the Walt Disney Corporation.”
