David Bowie who passed away a week has been given his own constellation It consists of seven stars in the shape of the lightning bolt. Belgian astronomers just announced the registration of the constellation, which sits appropriately in the vicinity of Mars.
Belgian radio station Studio Brussel and the MIRA public observatory teamed up to register the constellation, but finding the right place for the iconic rock star in the sky was complicated.
“The constellation is a copy of the iconic Bowie lightning and was recorded at the exact time of his death.
Referring to his various albums, we chose seven stars — Sigma Librae, Spica, Alpha Virginis, Zeta Centauri, SAA 204 132, and the Beta Sigma Octantis Trianguli Australis — in the vicinity of Mars.”
Bowie used the universe and space as an inspiration throughout his career, first finding success with the single Space Oddity. He created Ziggy Stardust, an extra-terrestrial rockstar and hits also included Starman and Life on Mars. The cover of his ’73 album Aladdin Sane featured a red and blue lightning bolt.
The creation of the constellation is part of the Stardust for Bowie tribute project. Fans can use Google Sky to add their favorite Bowie songs to a virtual version of the constellation.
His performances of Starman and Space Oddity here, give you an idea of the revolution he started over 40 years ago. Watch.
