Just when you thought that it’d all be done, comes The Break Up Shop. Yes, there’s now a service for breaking up with your significant other. Founded by two Canadian bros who love their idea enough to make it a thing but not enough to give their full names. The Breakup Shop will send a breakup text or email for $10, snail mail for $20, or the bound-to-be-SUPER-awkward phone call for $29. Emanuel Maiberg, a reporter for Motherboard, actually paid to “fake break up” with his girlfriend of five years by phone (she was warned). The resulting two-minute conversation was awkward in every way imaginable, especially when the caller tells Angela her makeup addiction and lack of cooking and cleaning (details provided by Maiberg) were turnoffs, but that
“they sound like really easy fixes … so I’m sure those are some things you could work on in the future.”
It all ends with by referring the callee to the shop’s online store, which can
“help you cope with anything you’re feeling during this time.”
This not the first time (or the last) that someone has profited from breakup pain. Taylor Swift, who wrote a ka-ching! song about ex Joe Jonas who, she told Ellen Degeneres on The Ellen Show, dumped her in “27 seconds over the phone”.
It’s never easy or fun, and at least this makes for good cocktail conversation, right? Well, maybe, this just sucks all around. Face it, you REALLY have to hate someone to end it like this. Btw, if cheating was involved, wonder if they can cc: his or her entire address book…?
