On perhaps a half day before the holiday, you have some free-time? Well, Francesco Fragomeni and Chris Limbrick got bored at work one day, and they decided to get creative. The result is the Fools Do Art project, in which they recreate famous masterpieces following two rules. The first one is that they can only work with the materials and props they have at hand in their office, the HQ of the website platform company, Squarespace in New York City. The second rule is that all editing must be done on their phones. Squarespace sponsored an exhibit of mine this summer and I’ve been these offices. It’s a “highly creative environment, to say the least. At a meeting I had there, employees were asked to stop playing pool outside a conference room we were meeting in. Not by me…
Anyway, constraint seems to have spurred Fragomeni and Limbrick’s imagination. Towels became headpieces, a funky table became an altar… their zany recreations have became more elaborate as the weeks passed. The duo occasionally enlists some of their co-workers, who stand in as extras when group compositions are necessary, such as their recreation of Rembrandt‘s The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp (1632). Fools Do Art is an ongoing endeavor, with new scenes being concocted since this post, no doubt. Here are a few. you can see more on their Tumblr here.
